Is rattan the same as bamboo? Although they look similar in appearance, rattan and bamboo are very different plants. Bamboo is part of the grass family, while rattan is a species of palm tree. Unlike bamboo which is hollow, rattan is a solid wood-like vine that is one of the strongest woods in the world. While it is solid and strong, it is also quite flexible which makes it an ideal material that can be shaped into intricately designed furniture pieces. In addition, its wood-like properties allow for it to be easily painted or stained. These unique attributes have made rattan a widely popular and sought after material which can only be found hanging from palm trees native to Southeast Asia. -

The construction of rattan furniture is made up of several bindings or wraps that hold the frame together. As such, there are lots of small spaces where dust and dirt can collect. Vacuum with an upholstery brush and dust your furniture item on a weekly basis. In addition to weekly cleanings, you should wipe down the frame and bindings with a damp towel monthly.
