Southeast Asian Art

Southeast Asia sat on the trade routes between China, India and the Islamic world, and its art shows all of those links. Our Southeast Asian collection covers ceramics from Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, Buddhist and Hindu sculpture, textiles such as ikat and batik, and metalwork. We are adding pieces now, so please check back or get in touch.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are Sawankhalok ceramics?

Sawankhalok wares were made at kilns near Si Satchanalai in northern Thailand, mainly in the 14th to 16th centuries. They include celadons and wares painted in underglaze iron black, and were traded widely across Southeast Asia.

What is the difference between ikat and batik?

In ikat, the threads are tied and dyed before the cloth is woven, which gives the pattern its soft, feathered edges. In batik, wax is applied to finished cloth to resist the dye.
